The Capuleti led by Tebaldo crash a party thrown by their sworn enemy, the Montecchi. A heated argument occurs that is interrupted by a mysterious masked stranger. Before things can escalate further guards are heard approaching. The group flees, all goes dark. Only the masked man remains, hiding while the town crier passes by. When all is clear, the masked man reemerges: it is Romeo. Giulietta greets her lover, Romeo. The two youth steal a moment to profess their eternal love despite their families’ enmity. Romeo leaves his beloved with a final kiss at dawn.

A mother is burned at the stake for suspected witchcraft, and avenged by her daughter when she throws the child of her executioner into the fire. The child’s father seeks vengeance for the act and forces his surviving son to devote his life to avenging his brother’s death. The story of how the gypsy died haunts every character of the opera. Once grown, Count di Luna is possessed by his need to avenge the death of his brother. Ferrando, the captain of di Luna’s guard uses the story to keep the men on their guard. Azucena sees the event repeating in every waking moment, in the flicker of the fire, and in the shape of shadows. But only she knows the truth. Possessed by a dark force in that moment, the child she threw into the flame was her own. She raises Count di Luna’s brother as her own child, calling him Manrico. Constantly haunted by her mother’s dying words ‘mi vendica’ (avenge me), Azucena sets in motion a series of events which lead to Manrico’s death.

A co-production with NATIONAL YIDDISH THEATRE FOLKSBIENE *World Premiere in January of 2022 Based on Giorgio Bassani’s 1962 novel, (considered a modern classic which is also the basis for Vittorio De Sica’s 1970 film adaptation starring Dominique Sanda and Helmet Berger – a 1972 Academy Award winner for Best Foreign Language Film), THE GARDEN OF THE FINZI-CONTINIS is set on the eve of World War II and tells the story of an aristocratic Italian-Jewish family, the Finzi-Continis, who believe they will be immune to the changes happening around them.
